But it is rather difficult, even acknowledging this shortcomings, to finish the book with anything shy of a lifted spirit. Elevation is bright - in both narrative and tone - and it frequently feels like an intentional vehicle for a very overt social and political message, perhaps to its own detriment. But I never quite expected to read something that felt almost like Stephen King’s take on a Hallmark movie. Stephen King has written plenty of material, usually of the shorter variety, that not only lacks the horrific elements for which he’s most known, but is also absent of almost any suspense. Verdict – This slight and sensitive story wears its socially conscious heart a bit too strongly on its sleeve, but a bright tone and a steady undercurrent of hopeful optimism make this a lovely and uncommonly inspiring entry in King’s otherwise nightmarish canon.
